August, 1998
To the Honorable Thomas Ridge, Governor of the Commonwelth of Pennsylvania, USA
Dear Governor ;
Whereas Mumia Abu-Jamal, a black american award-winning pregressive journalist, has claimed his innocence from deathrow since 1982 ; whereas he was sentenced to death, after a rush to judgement, by a judge who previously belonged to the same rightwing police union -the Fraternal Order of Policeas a white police officer found slain alongside the grievously wounded Jamal ; whereas Jamal’s original and PCRA judge holds the national record of death sentences targgettings 93 % or Non-Whites ; whereas the police misconduct scandal tarnishing the Philadephia Police Force received national coverage ; whereas the poverty of the defendant deprived him of experts and investigators at his 1982 trial ; whereas key witness who charged Jamal have today spoken up to say they were coerced ; whereas the jury was selected on the basis of racist criteria ; whereas all Jamal’s books and legal documents have recently been seized from his cell ; whereas the F.O.P. and their supporters have recently bought an ad for over 50.000 dollars in the New York Times to call for Jamal’s execution ; whereas there have been ongoing portest from Amnesty International, the U. N. Humman Rights Commision, the European Parlament, Presidents of the Republic worlwide as 50th anniversary for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we appeal to you, as President, not to sign a warrant for his execution should such an occasion arise and to take appropriate steps to assure his freedom.
